Scary Bus Ride

Between Sub-Freshman and Junior year I rode the bus every day to and from school. Generally, I had good experiences every time I rode the bus, however, one experience tainted my bus ride home forever.
I got on the bus and went to the most comfortable seat, below the heater. The frost outside caused the windows to fog up and the loud clank of people knocking ice off their feet was ever constant. The bus ride was a blur, with a podcast in my ear and my hands in my pockets I was more than content. I gathered my things as my stop arrived. I noticed another man preparing to get off at the same time. The man was wearing glasses has a dirty shirt and seemed significantly overweight. I thought nothing of it.  As the bus slowed down I leaned against the momentum of the bus making sure my feet didn’t slide over the wet, slick ground. I pushed the back doors open and mumbled “thank you” under my breath. I jumped over a patch of snow and landed on the sidewalk. The night before the snow plows pushed all the fresh powdery snow to the side of the road, clearing them for all the morning commuters. But the snow piles hid a dangerous threat. The ice that was under the snow was not visible or made any signs it was there just a silent piece of dangerous ground. I got off the bus and with pure luck avoided the ice, however, the disheveled man was not so lucky. As he jumped over the snowbank his feet flew out from under him and be began to fall backward. I noticed all of this with the corner of my eye. I turned around just in time to see the back of his head hit the doorsill of the bus. His glasses flew off and broke. He fell down the snow bank and his head rested peacefully under the bus only two feet from the wheels which prepared to depart to the next stop. As I ran to the man I yelled to the bus driver not to move. I tried to pull the man from the wheels, but the snow and his weight made it impossible. The wheels began to turn. After only half a rotation they stopped and bus driver jumped out. The man was out cold. I tried to find his glasses but they had shattered on impact. I heard the honking of cars behind the bus and later the sirens of the ambulance as it approached. Luckily the woman whose car was stuck behind the bus was a CPR instructor and allowed me to step away from the scene.

After the ambulance arrived I prepared to go home, I filled out an incident report with the CU-MTD, not waiting to see what happened to the man hoping he was ok. This bus ride is perhaps one of my strongest memories and every winter as I get off the bus I remember that crazy day.

  1. This is a pretty scary story, because you could have easily slipped if you had landed in the wrong spot. I ride the MTD a lot and its usually peaceful. One time I was riding the bus home and a guy next to us go really angry because I was talking on my phone. He asked me to turn off my phone, but I ignored him. After a few minutes, he tried to hit me. Probably not as scaring as your story, but it just goes to show that things happen when you're on a bus with ~20 other people.

  2. I liked the detail to this story, and the way you were able to portray the emotions you were feeling. I ride the bus home everyday (non-soccer season) and whenever it's wet or snowy i am usually afraid to jump and fall. But the biggest fear i Have is missing my stop.

  4. I think the bus has a bad reputation, I remember once there was a homeless man on the bus that was stinking it up, but other than it's nice. This has to be one of the craziest moments, because the guy could've died. Once someone a woman almost died when she swinging into a xenote (a sinkhole with water), but didn't let go of the rope and hit her head against the wall behind her and fell into the water. Luckily she didn't lose consciousness and was OK.

  6. This is a really scary story but I totally get your strong emotions and reactions because unfortunately I experienced a similar accident. One day I was riding with my friends parents to a soccer game, it was late at night (probably 8:00 or 9:00) and we were stopped at a stoplight. The light turned green and we accelerated forwards. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a biker speed across the intersection seemingly out of nowehere. It was as if life moved in slow motion as both my friend's dad and I realized what was happening and my friends's mom, who was driving the car, a split second later. We collided, swerved to the side of the street knocking a fire hydrant clean out of the ground, and all rushed out of the car. I knew we had driven into the biker for a good second or two and was completely stunned, we might have just killed someone. The bike had crumpled like a paper ball but miraculously the biker was awake and alive. The ambulance quickly escorted him away and later we learned he was healing and well but the moment was shocking because it could have ended so much worse.

  8. This story was pretty scary, but not because of the content. While I was reading this, I kept thinking that something would happen to YOU directly (no offense). However, when you revealed that someone else was in danger, I started getting goosebumps like Umar. Very well written!

  9. I ride the bus a lot and the only thing out of the ordinary that I have ever experienced is someone getting really mad and yelling at the driver to turn around. That's nothing compared to what you had to go through and I hope that I never have to experience anything like that. It sounds like you dealt with a very intense situation very well, I don't think I could have reacted so quickly.
