PE

Uni high fitness is something that every student has to endure. Even before attending Uni the young subbies hear about how “terrible” and “exhausting” Uni fitness can be. But I think that in the end the Uni high PE classes and department are very beneficial to Uni students and make them healthier and instills a positive routine that keeps their bodies healthy for the future.
Personally, I have always loved PE. When I was elementary I loved playing all the fun games in PE such as bumper carts and the everyone’s favorite Parachute game. PE allowed to me release my stress and spend some time having competitive, exhausting fun. Then when I entered middle school PE was a bit less fun, we were forced to focus on more “healthy” exercises, such as running, push-ups, and the FitnessGram Pacer Test™. The more intense exercises really opened me up to the idea of fitness. I despised the pain and soreness from working out and doing those exercises but in the end, I felt better and healthier. I realized that not everything can be fun when you want to stay healthy. I would do fairly well during the mile and other running events and decided to join cross country. After next year I decided I hated running and never continued my running career, despite the fact I was fairly good.
When I got accepted to Uni. my older sister would tell me how terrible the fitness program was and how she despised it. But when I had my first PE classes I realized I loved it. The fact that my class is fairly athletic and has a disproportionate amount of really fit people, pushed me to try harder and harder to stay fit and push myself to become more athletic. Unlike most Uni Students I was excited to enter Junior/Senior PE. Despite the fact that we replace playing fun sports such as Pickleball with weight lifting I was excited to see myself get stronger. Weight lifting can either be the most intense 25 minutes or the most boring depending on your mindset. I try to get the most out of it, but like most people, I have off days when I would rather be playing ultimate frisbee.
I feel like the Uni High PE classes prepare the students by instilling a more healthy lifestyle and giving them the knowledge to understand the basics of strengthening their bodies. I definitely feel that in the future I will try to work out and keep my body healthy and I can thank the Uni PE classes for that.

  1. IMO PE is terrible, possibly the worst part about uni. Not to say that it didn't make more healthy or run faster, but just the thought of having fitness makes me dread that day. When I broke my ankle and got to do elliptical for a couple of months, my life became pretty stress-free because I didn't have to worry about fitness. I can see why people like it though! and sports is pretty fun sometimes

  2. For me, I dread whenever we have fitness because I see it as pointless running, but when we actually begin the workout, I appreciate it. Last year, I discovered that just like so many studies and tests have shown, running and aerobic physical exercise is actually one of the best things you can do to release stress. Often times when I was stressed because of school or soccer or something else, I could take it out on the track. Even though I would prefer to play a sport to running on our small track, I agree that it makes us healthier and in better shape.

  3. I really like your blog post, because I absolutely love the Uni PE program. While there's some room for slacking, it definitely has an effect on grades and how teachers treat you, and it seems *almost* everybody leaves Senior year noticeably more fit and a better runner than when they entered Uni. My only complaint is that we don't get enough sports days :(

  4. I used to dread PE, especially fitness. It felt like a disruption of the flow of the day, and running isn't my favorite source of exercise. I'm starting to enjoy it more though! I like the feeling that I'm doing something healthy for my body and improving at it. Afterwards, I think it would be useful to have more time for recovery and showering.

  5. I guess I do agree with you partially here. I think that PE (fitness in particular) really isn't that bad. It seems like something that students a whole enjoy hating on. I guess that makes sense, but I realized at some point Sophomore year that I ended up running about as much in sports as I did in fitness. I don't think that fitness is really nearly as hard as most people make it out to be, but it gets boring sometimes, in my opinion.

  6. Yeah, I totally agree. In middle school, I would understand when people complained about parts of PE being required because it was stupid to hold everyone to the same standard for, say, the mile test. But for Uni fitness I don't get the complaints. Our PE teachers, for all their faults, do a good job of judging you based on effort and improvement as opposed to holding everyone to the same standard. Not to mention I would never have started exercising regularly if it weren't for fitness. Prior to fitness, running outside of a mile test or a life-or-death situation seemed like a bizarre thing that only uber-fit people did and now it's something I'll take with me when I leave.

  7. My perspective towards the fitness program is also pretty positive because it's a good way for me to distance myself from schoolwork and stress. Although the 12-minute run is still one of the worst inventions of mankind, everything else I am grateful for. I'm sure I'd be really unfit without fitness and weights. I like fitness more then weights though because in fitness I can just zone out when I'm running while weights I actually have to concentrate. All in all I am grateful for Uni's fitness program and I will continue exercising when I leave Uni.

  8. I agree that Uni High PE is beneficial in that it encourages healthy lifestyles, but regardless of how rewarding it may be, I still can't stand it. Like most people, I enjoy a good workout every once in a while, and like to stay somewhat healthy. That's fine with me, but having to do it every single day is what gets to me. There are some days where that 20 minute workout is the most unnecessary, draining, and annoying part of my day. Hopefully we'll all come to appreciate it like you do sometime in the future.

  9. I am undecided about how I feel on Uni's fitness program. I enjoy fitness and weights, I guess just because I like exercise, but the fitness tests are what I really hate. Even though I know that they don't matter at all, they still freak me out to no end every single time. And I don't even know what makes me so scared about them, so I can't really fix this issue. When I talk to other people, it seems like they also hate fitness testing and get nervous about it, so I really just don't understand why we keep it around when it's a major source of stress for most of the students. But I like the fitness program itself.

  10. Before I came to Uni, the only thing I'd hear was how terrible and exhausting the fitness program was. At my middle school, we rarely did any running. Hearing that I'd soon have to run at least a mile every other day... not good news. Today, I actually enjoy and look forward to fitness, and sometimes weights. It's a time for me to forget about the school day and all the work I have to complete and just run. It's a time where most of the stress I have is relieved. (lol it also probably helped me burn those Big Macs I ate during subbie year if you read my blog post)

  11. I have a lot of mixed feelings about the Uni PE program. Up until last year, I hated going to fitness even though it wasn't terrible once I had to start running (I didn't like it but I exaggerated how terrible it was in my head). I actually don't mind fitness that much anymore. I think it gets "easier" junior and senior year, in that the workouts aren't as difficult. But I still dislike a few things about the PE program. Although I liked sports a lot, it always really bothered me how the "super teams" some of the PE teachers would make were always completely made up of guys. And though I personally haven't been affected by this, a lot of injured people complain that the teachers force you to work out, even with severe injuries. But, as I think about everything, to each their own!

  12. I've always really enjoyed PE. I've never been a fan of fitness because, like others said, it just seems like pointless running. However, I've always seen every workout as a chance to improve my body, so I always try my best. When junior year started, I was really excited to replace sports with weights. I lift outside of school, but I like having the opportunity to get more lifting in during the school week in PE. In my opinion, we should weights and sports instead of weights and fitness. Personally, i try harder in sports because I enjoy what I'm doing more. But that's just my opinion

  13. I honestly enjoy PE. Well I used to. Subbie year- sophomore year We've had fitness then sports but now junior year we go to weights instead of sports. This wouldn't bother me as much if sports days were more common and if we didn't have triple fitness every single week. I don't know it gets tiring. As much as it might not enjoy PE i'm always happy to know that we get a better workout/ education then those pe classes of other schools. Not sure where I'm going with this, anyways I've enjoyed your blog through out this semester and hope to maybe read more if you continue it.

  14. I absolutely despise Uni Fitness. Sports was pretty fun, and even weights isn't that bad. But I can find no similar good in Fitness. Before coming to Uni, P.E. was one of the best classes. I would almost call it the highlight of my day. We would play fun games, occasionally get to go outside, and even the more 'exercise-y' activities weren't too strenuous or boring. Throughout my entire Uni career I've lagged behind in P.E. I was always near the back, if not the slowest person on the track. Throughout the workouts I would get awful side stiches. My dad's a runner, but I don't think I'll ever enjoy it because of the negative experience I've had with it in Fitness.

For the past two and a half years I haven't been in Fitness in the same capacity due to various health problems related to my back. It's still been difficult and grueling, but at least running on an elliptical means I got less side stitches. Now I'm out of P.E. entirely because of my back surgery, and I must say I'm very glad to not have to run the 5K again. My heart goes out to everyone who has to endure it one last time.
